Are you an experienced Health and Safety professional with a strong background in laboratory or scientific environments, looking for the opportunity to take ownership of an operational SHE role?
If so, this could be the role for you.
We are recruiting for an Assistant SHE Manager on behalf of a non-profit, government-funded organisation, supporting the appointment of a key hire within the SHE function.
This is a newly created role following a restructure of the function. The focus of this role will be on the operational delivery of SHE, supporting the wider business in maintaining and improving standards across a scientific environment.
The business operates with a strong commitment to health and safety and has made significant progress in building a positive safety culture. There is a good reporting culture in place, with near misses helping identify potential hazards and improve controls. Senior management are supportive of H&S, and there are opportunities for the right person to be supported in their development through further qualifications.
Main Responsibilities:
- Support the day-to-day operational delivery of SHE across the business.
- Take ownership of operational SHE matters, ensuring risks are identified, managed and controlled effectively.
- Support the monitoring and investigation of incidents and near misses, helping to drive continuous improvement.
- Work with site teams and internal stakeholders to progress actions and maintain compliance.
- Promote a positive safety culture across the organisation.
- Assist with the ongoing maintenance and development of ISO 45001 systems.
- Provide practical SHE guidance to teams working in a laboratory or scientific environment.
- Contribute to wider improvement initiatives and support the development of SHE capability across the business.
- Experience working in a laboratory or scientific environment, with a strong understanding of how these settings operate and the common associated risks.
- Degree-level qualification in a scientific field would be ideal.
- A minimum of a NEBOSH Certificate is required.
- Experience in a Health and Safety Advisor, Officer or Coordinator role, ideally with 2+ years’ experience in a similar position.
- Strong practical knowledge of health and safety in a lab-based or scientific setting.
- A proactive and collaborative approach, with the ability to build relationships across a business.
- Full driving licence, as public transport options are limited.
- Working towards or holding a NEBOSH Diploma.
- Experience as a Biological Safety Officer would be a significant advantage.
